The People’s Review: Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial – Like Father, Like Son!

Posted by thepeoplechamp82 on September 7, 2010

Enthusiasts it’s time once again for another edition of “The People’s Review” and this week I’m reviewing the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial.  This is the second cigar blended by Jaime Garcia, son of legendary cigar blender Don Pepin Garcia, and the first cigar to bare his name (Jaime blended the My Father cigar).  This cigar consists of 2 types of Nicaraguan tobacco from the Pepin Garcia farm and the Oliva Tobacco company wrapped in a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.  The Reserva Especial comes in 6 sizes and I will be reviewing the Toro Gordo size.  Let’s get this review started shall we?!

Vitola: Toro Gordo 6×60

Filler: Nicaraguan

Binder: Nicaraguan

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf

Strength: Medium-to-Full

Construction & Pre-light

The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper on this cigar is smooth and oily with a couple veins running down the cigar.  It has a firm feel to it with no soft spots and an evenly packed cigar.  There’s a nice rich chocolate and grassy aroma resonating from the cigar and the draw, once clipped, is solid with a small amount of resistance.  The cold draw gives off a lot of grassiness with chocolate and a small tingle of spice on the lips.  Let’s light this up and get started!

The Beginning

Right off the break, the first couple of puffs produce a lot of earth tones with a nice sweetness on the palate and a subtle spice on the back of the palate and through the nose.  Most of the flavors are well-balanced to start and the smoke is cool and smooth with no harshness.  This is definitely a full-strength cigar as the nic buzz is kicking in yet it’s not overpowering so far.  There’s a nice coffee finish after each puff which helps to accent the other flavors.  The construction is pretty good so far: the draw is producing a lot of smoke, the ash is a nice whitish-grey color and while a bit flaky is holding nicely and the burn line is fairly even.  I had high expectations of this cigar going in and so far it has not disappointed me.  Let’s keep this going!

Halfway Point

Moving forward with the Reserva Especial and there’s a nice transition to a more toasty flavor mixed with coffee and earthiness.  The subtle spice I experienced in the beginning has faded considerably giving way to the previously mentioned notes with the addition of a subtle sweetness on the retrohale.  The strength has settled to a slightly more full medium yet it’s still giving off a nice nic kick.  The construction continues to impress with the ash still kind of flaky but holding firm and the burn line is razor sharp.  Halfway through this cigar and there’s nothing bad to say about this cigar: plenty of flavor and a wonderful construction…just a great experience so far!  Let’s see how this cigar finishes!

Finish Line

Winding down toward the end of this stick and there’s more sweetness creeping into the picture with a subtle spice and some nice coffee notes.  There’s a nice coffee and earthy finish on the palate yet the flavor profile resembles the beginning of the cigar.  The construction never changed at all and the flavors I experienced were really enjoyable with varying differences in the finish.  All-in-all this cigar met my high expectations so you can guess what my verdict’s going to be…

VERDICT = EPIC WIN!! This cigar was great all the way around and will definitely have a spot in my humidor!  At around $9/stick, it’s well worth the purchase of a couple singles or even a box…the strength and flavor profile would fit the palate of any full-bodied cigar smoker in my humble opinion.  Definitely give this stick a try…you won’t be disappointed!

Nice man! I’m glad you enjoyed this stick. This was one of my favorites this year.

  2. Nice review. I have not been able to land one of these yet, but having read two reviews I think I should give it a try.
